Rose Polenzani > This August I traveled with my friend Bryna to Brighton, England in order to meet Sharon Lewis, the brilliant UK songwriter who was half of the duo Pooka. Sharon arranged for she and I to play a house concert together through the Brighton-based house concert collective "Healthy Concerts" (here is the poster for the show). It struck me as funny that I don't have any quality pictures to show you from that concert. Maybe it is because I cried for so much of the night. Sharon was absolutely brilliant live, so emotionally clear, so coaxing. Bryna started crying on the third or fourth song and I was bawling soon after, all the way through the end. Sharon played a set, and then I played a set, and then we played a short set together (after which I recommenced crying).
Rose Polenzani > Although the show was a focal point of the journey, it was the rest of the week, spent mostly in the company of Chris Kirkland and Sharon Lewis that we documented. We knew that Chris and Sharon have collaborated before (he designed her website, and they've written some material together), so we were overjoyed when he arrived with Sharon to meet us off the train. They took us to the beach twice (it was incredibly hot in England!). We saw the beach huts along the Brighton beach - you can rent one and keep your grill or sunchairs inside! We also saw tiny, happy worms swimming in the water.

Rose Polenzani > Sharon through Bryna. I looked up from my towel and saw Sharon smiling... she was framed so beautifully by Bryna, I had to take a picture.
Rose Polenzani > On Sunday night we had a jam. What a treat to hear Sharon play off the top of her head. She's a wonderful, gentle piano player.
Rose Polenzani > Chris played the "double bass" during the jam. If you ever flagged, you could look up to him and his smile would re-invigorate you. I could have made up a million songs!
Rose Polenzani > I started by playing the guitar, and I took my solos quietly.
Rose Polenzani > One of the songwriters we met through Sharon and Chris was Paul Chi (below left - with the red halo). He was playing some new songs, co-written from poems in Chinese. Paul was an incredible performer, and he could sing as inspiringly in a theater as he could in his own living room. It turns out that he's very good friends with one of my favorite people in the world: Oen Kennedy, who lives near me in the Boston area.
Rose Polenzani > A raven from the Tower of London - Bryna and I saw the Tower on the one day we allowed ourselves to leave Brighton (such a wonderful town!). There are four ravens living in the Tower, and legend has it that if they ever leave, England will crumble. I took two very poor pictures of the ravens, because I was afraid to get closer to them. It was Bryna who finally braved the beautiful shot below.
