Rose Polenzani  > good times > August in the UK
Spending the month in the UK with Sharon Lewis (formerly of Pooka) - a real adventure and I hope to actually feel that the whole time.

Rose Polenzani > August 1st and 2ndI did manage to sleep on the plane, but still, at the time I took this photo (of Brighton station in the south of England), an employee of the Thameslink train I'd just arrived on was discovering my abandoned guitar. I'd left it in the overhead compartment! I can't believe it. I looked up after taking this lovely picture and saw him making his way with the guitar in one hand and a bag of trash in the other. "Sir! Sir, that's mine!" I was so embarrassed. Brighton is so beautiful. You do get a feeling of clumsiness at the sight. I spent much of today trying to remember to look RIGHT before crossing the street.
Rose Polenzani > Sharon asked me to bring her a Red Sox baseball cap, and here she is wearing it. She cooked me a lovely sweet potato soup. I don't know that I would say "lovely" if it was yesterday and I was in Boston, but it's today so whatever. But tomorrow I'm going to stop this lovely crap and be a Midwestern girl, otherwise what's the point of life? If you're not going to try to be who you are? I felt sometimes that instead of introducing myself I was trying to fade into the background. Sigh. I'm being too honest, aren't I? It's the jet lag. Oh, no, actually you're used to me being too honest, so let's not worry about that.
Rose Polenzani > After dinner, we listened to the Mountain Firework Company (wow they were incredible) and painted our nails and drank white wine. REALLY. here's proof. These are nice photos and all, but I also should mention that I swam in the sea today and struggled over large painful pebbles to do it. And don't let's forget that after the nails, we sang together and that was inspiring. And after that we went to the radio station and promoted tomorrow's show. I should have taken more pictures. The Mountain Firework Company (on tomorrow's show with us) played the same radio show that we did, and they were "superb," to use the words of the DJ. I never heard so much picking sound like one single river. All four of them sang, and there was a double bass, banjo, snare drum and guitar player involved. It was so beautiful that I think the DJ took at least one photo of my nodding, unbridled smile. Sharon and I sang a new song of hers called "sweetheart" that puts me in the mind of the first song I ever heard her sing: "city sick." It was really beautiful. I sang a song too (Queen Anne's Lace) but I was so distracted by all that had gone before me (not to mention the fantastic DJ, who at one point said "500 fingernails... lucky man!" over the airwaves for who knows what reason) that I couldn't tell you the first thing about how it went. The last bit of good news is that it's 1am and I am tired enough to sleep. Hang jet lag. I'm hitting the floor.
Rose Polenzani > August 3rd, 2005Here is the requested photo of me looking to the right first for oncoming traffic (I aim to please, especially you two). Today I woke at 11 and took a short run near the Sea, stopping at some families who were playing bowls. Wish I had a picture to show you... This was a quick walk to Caffe Nero for an iced soya mocha (honestly, there isn't any real reason to stop drinking them, not even that mochas are a little pathetic). I had fifteen minutes to do it, and this photo started a little snapshot spree, the results of which you will mostly be spared.
Rose Polenzani > Back home, we laugh a lot about the myriad posters concerning IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). So this is for the folks back home. You can see me holding my coffee drink in this photo. Fun with photos.
Rose Polenzani > In Brighton, there is a sculpture of a juggler in front of town hall. For reals. What do we have in Somerville?
Rose Polenzani > After rehearsing for a bit, we headed down to Sussex Arts club, which had a brass "Members Only" sign laid into the front door. This turned out not to be true, of course. The chandelier is pictured here. Matt, the sound man, was incredible. I was checking with the song "Allah" and I couldn't nail the yell in the chorus, which was (evidently clearly) frustrating me. Matt asked what was the matter, and I said "I just can't quite get the yell out." He said "why?" and I explained that it was just too loud, and when I came so far off the microphone it started to sound totally removed.... To my shock, he suggested that he could do something about it, and HE DID. Thanks to Matt for helping me get the yell out. Compression, by the way. That was the trick.
Rose Polenzani > Hard to get a great shot of Sharon singing, but this was alright - I love that guitar of hers. She tunes in in some crazy open G tuning, you should hear it.
Rose Polenzani > Sharon's friend, also named Sharon, came up to me after my set and said some really nice things to me. I stole about 10-15 hugs off of her, I needed it so badly. I'm not as used to travel as I once was, and I've gotten very comfortable being surrounded by the ones I love, so basically anyone who came near me after this show was grabbed or could freely grab me. I was kissed twice on the lips in fact - fantastic and quite unexpected. I was so nervous about this first show, especially after hearing the Mountain Firework Company the night before, who are so phenomenal, and hearing Sharon's new songs. She continues to write just beautiful new melodies and explore such Universal ideas - it's already been a humbling trip.
