Rose Polenzani > This August I traveled with my friend Bryna to Brighton, England in order to meet Sharon Lewis, the brilliant UK songwriter who was half of the duo Pooka. Sharon arranged for she and I to play a house concert together through the Brighton-based house concert collective "Healthy Concerts" (here is the poster for the show). It struck me as funny that I don't have any quality pictures to show you from that concert. Maybe it is because I cried for so much of the night. Sharon was absolutely brilliant live, so emotionally clear, so coaxing. Bryna started crying on the third or fourth song and I was bawling soon after, all the way through the end. Sharon played a set, and then I played a set, and then we played a short set together (after which I recommenced crying).

Rose Polenzani > These last three photos are my favorites from a series of black and whites I took of Sharon and Chris. They play together sometimes as "Magic Baby" and it was fun to pretend I was a photographer doing a photo shoot with them.
Rose Polenzani > Martha sang as well - and her voice is stunning - a smoked-out traditional folksinging sound - like listening to a flute! Our jaws dropped.
Rose Polenzani > The picture on the right is (clockwise from left) Bryna, Chris, Me and Sharon.
Rose Polenzani > My favorite memory is the last night we spent at Sharon's house. She invited two friends over for dinner; this is Luke Adams. What a treat to meet such wonderful musicians and people. The conversation flowed first, and then the music started. I got to sing a couple songs with Sharon again, and nothing says "I love your music" quite like singing someone's melody back to them. It was such an honor to share songs with her and her friends. We got Chris to sing a song he wrote on the double bass again, and he also played with me on a new song, while Sharon sang the harmony we had worked out for the house concert. Luke played a few songs too - he was a brash vocalist and a fantastic songwriter.
Rose Polenzani > Also a camel on the streets of Brighton! He was penned up outside a newly opened middle-eastern nightclub. He mostly chewed huge stones of cud (that traveled up his throat every few minutes) and roared. Yes! He roared so nicely. A real highlight.
Rose Polenzani > A raven from the Tower of London - Bryna and I saw the Tower on the one day we allowed ourselves to leave Brighton (such a wonderful town!). There are four ravens living in the Tower, and legend has it that if they ever leave, England will crumble. I took two very poor pictures of the ravens, because I was afraid to get closer to them. It was Bryna who finally braved the beautiful shot below.
